Innovative process for creating digital models of built infrastructure using point clouds
Abstract:
An innovative process for creating digital models of built infrastructure using point clouds.
The purpose of the InfraCloud project is to test and upgrade an existing prototype for the semi-automatic creation of virtual models of built infrastructure, which are used for further design, reconstruction of the existing state, or management and maintenance of built infrastructure.
The prototype is based on an algorithm with integrated domains, which connects characteristic 3D points on the basis of a database of characteristic cross-sections and creates (virtual) BIM models of built infrastructure. The 3D models are then upgraded with attributes (road data bank, materials), which leads to the creation of smart models (BIM models) or updated models of the existing situation with automatic inventory of installed quantities.
More accurate recognition of built structures and the creation of digital models enable comprehensive, integrated planning and management, as well as more rational spatial planning and safer implementation of spatial interventions.
The result of the project is an application that recognizes essential and non-essential 3D points from an unstructured point cloud (LiDAR image), filters them, and uses typical cross-sections (infrastructure element libraries) to recognize the built structure and create a digital model (BIM model – model enriched with geometry and material attributes). The model will be saved in an open code format and suitable for import into other software tools.
