About us

The predecessor of the Laboratory for Geospatial Modelling, Multimedia and Artificial intelligence (GeMMA), the Laboratory for Geometric Modelling and Multimedia Algorithms, was established on 1st January 2000 by prof. Borut Žalik. The initial research focus was on the algorithms of 2D computational geometry and 3D geometric modelling, especially their efficient and stable implementation in various applications including civil and mechanical engineering, medicine, digital cultural heritage, and geographical information systems (GIS).  

Over the years, GeMMA’s research areas have also expanded, including artificial intelligence (AI), GeoAI, simulations and modelling, remote sensing data processing, scientific visualization, and big data processing. In 2016, GeMMA unified with the Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence (CGAI). Today, GeMMA is the strongest research laboratory at the Institute for Computer Science, and one of the largest laboratories at the Faculty of electrical engineering and Computer Science.  

Since GeMMA was founded, more than 30 PhDs have been graduated under the supervision of its members. On this basis, the Laboratory has built a team of experienced project leaders who are gaining new research projects at national and international level, from research to R&D projects with the industry. As the main research orientations changed, the Laboratory was renamed in 2021. GeMMA has 34 full-time members (10 PhDs, while half of the rest are PhD students) at the end of 2023, and has since 2024 been taken over by prof. Domen Mongus.

New leadership
Prof. Domen Mongus has taken the torch from Prof. Borut Žalik to lead the GeMMA Lab. Gemma Fusion Suite full-stack solution deployed in over 10 production environments. GeMMA Lab. counted over 30 members.
2021
Laboratory renamed
Lab has been renamed to Laboratory for Geospatial Modelling, Multimedia and Artificial intelligence. Over 20 ongoing projects. GeMMA Lab. counted 28 members.
2016
CGAI merges with GeMMA
CGAI (Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence) Lab joined GeMMA. Number of members increased to 25. First partnerships with global vendors secured.
2015
International recognition
GeMMA Lab counted 21 members. G2-Farad lab facility added to GeMMA team. First international research award won. Membership in the executive committee of European Umbrella Organization for Geographic Information extended.
2007
New lab facility
Several new national & international R&D projects. GeMMA Lab counted 12 members. Obtained G2-Weber lab facility at UM FERI.
2002
First R&D projects
New projects collaboration with GURS & IGEA. GeMMA Lab counted 6 members.
2000
Birth of GeMMA Lab
Laboratory for Geometric Modelling and Multimedia Algorithms (GeMMA), established by prof. Borut Žalik. The Lab counted 4 members.
